Mudhoney Equipment
(under construction) updated 13/2/00

I realise that there a very good Mudhoney Equipment FAQ already exists on the web, but I decided to make my own anyway. I've tried to research this info myself rather than ripping it off from anywhere else, if you feel that I've stolen anything off you, mail me and I'll sort it. This page is still under construction, so please forgive it's crappiness.

GUITARS

Those Mudhoney boys, they sure loved their guitars. One type they used were Hagstrom guitars. I also know they used fenders. I've seen Mark playing a Fender Jaguar and I think they used Stratocasters also. Mudhoney's fuzzy guitar sounds are not just down to effects pedals- they also used single coil pickups a lot, which generally produce a fuzzier and more "dirty" sound than humbucking pickups. Another well known Fender user from the Seattle scene is Mr Kurt Cobain, whose weapon of choice around the time of Nirvana's "Nevermind" LP was also a Fender Jag.

Ikeda Ikkei was kind enough to let me know that Mr Turner's favoured guitar is the Fender Mustang and he uses this guitar most, if not all the time. Thanks very much for that info! The Mustang was another Cobain favourite (I believe he owned 9 or 10 different Mustangs at various points in his life).

I have recently found some pictures of Mark playing a Fender Telecaster at a 1999 show. Here is one of those pictures.

More guitar info to come.

BASS

Not too much to say here. Matt Lukin used Fender basses, the choice of many rock bassplayers, including Michael Starr from Alice in Chains, Matt Freeman out of Rancid and Mark Pierce out of Zeke (Countless bassists, past and present, use Fenders. These are just examples off the top of my head). Matt's model of choice was the Precision bass, also known as the P-Bass. The headstock of Matt's bass is visible on the back of the "Superfuzz Bigmuff" sleeve.

EFFECTS PEDALS

Mudhoney liked their effects pedals. No kidding. The sleeve of "Superfuzz Bigmuff" credits Mark Arm as "vocals, Superfuzz" and Steve Turner as a "Bigmuff" user. For the recording of "Tomorrow Hit Today", Steve apparently used loads of different pedals (30? something like that..). Mudhoney are really into that retro 60's fuzz sound. Try experimenting. If you're brave and have some time on your hands, you could even try building your own fuzz pedal from the info at Unofficial Mudhoney dot com.

DRUMS

Besides being able to play the "rock beat" on my friend's kit, I know nothing about drums. I do know however that Danny Peters' kit is smaller than the average drum kit (about 3/4 size or something). You can see it on the back of "Superfuzz Bigmuff" and also on the "Suck You Dry" video.

AMPLIFICATION

Not too sure about this. I'll update this later, hopefully.

OTHER STUFF

Mark Arm plays an organ. You can hear an example of this on the excellent "A Thousand Forms of Mind" from the "Tomorrow Hit Today" LP.

If you have any info you would like to contribute, please mail me. Hopefully I'll get some guitar pictures and stuff up here soon as well.
